During this "How To" guide, I will try to describe the procedure for removing and refitting the timing belt of a CVH. You may skip the Removal and go for the Refitting by clicking the link below.

Removal

Tool List:

• A decent Socket set with 10/13/15/19/41mm sockets.
• A decent 19mm ring spanner.
• Torque Wrench.
• Suitable container for the reusable parts.

  1. Make sure you have all the correct tools as listed above.
  2. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
  3. Slacken off the alternator retaining bolts, twist the alternator downwards and remove the auxiliary drive belt
  4. Remove the auxiliary belt pulley, replacing the retaining bolt when removed. The auxiliary drive belt pulley retaining nut is torqued up quite high, removing it requires a quick sharp knock of the spanner with a hammer or mallet to "Break" the seal.
  5. Using a 19mm ring spanner located on the auxiliary belt pulley retaining bolt, rotate the crank in a clockwise direction to bring piston #1 to TDC (Top Dead Centre). To verify this check that the mark on the crank gear lines up with the mark on the block.
  6. Remembering that the crank to cam rotation ratio is 2:1 (ie. 2 crank revolutions per 1 cam revolution), now check that the cam timing mark on the pulley is in line with the mark on the head. If not, rotate the crank through another 360 degrees and check again.
  7. Slacken the timing belt tensioner bolts, and move the tensioner to the left.
  8. Remove the timing belt.

Refitting

  1. Check that the cam and crank have not been moved by checking the timing marks.
  2. Place a new timing belt over the crank pulley, engaging the teeth, pull it upwards tightly on to the right hand side of the cam pulley. Place the belt around the rest of the cam pulley, locating it around the tensioner and water pump gear.
  3. Place your torque wrench and 41mm socket on to the cam pulley, and put 20Nm of reverse torque on to the timing belt. Slip the tensioner back over to the right and tighten the bolts with your free hand and a 13mm socket on a ratchet.
  4. Replace the rocker cover and any ancillaries and wiring removed from the head.
  5. Replace the lower timing belt cover.
  6. Remove the auxiliary belt pulley retaining bolt, replace the pulley and then replace the bolt.
  7. Replace the auxiliary drive belt, prise the alternator upwards to tighten the belt, then tighten the alternator retaining bolts.
  8. Replace the upper timing belt cover.
